The reasons Chinese herbal medicine is so popular are because of its emphasis on prevention as a healing method, and it is simply gentler and safer than chemical medications. Chinese herbs can also be taken to reduce the side effects of other medication. Herbal medicine can strengthen the body's immune system while antibiotics weaken the system.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a science and art dealing with the maintenance of health and the prevention, alleviation, and cure of disease. It has a long history for over two thousand years. It is a nation's heritage of Chinese people.
TCM has its own unique theory and method for the diagnosis and treatment of disease. TCM says that there are important balance inside your body. If these important balance have been broke disorder and disease tend to follow. When you are sick your symptom is indicating the position of unbalance inside your body. Rebuilding different balance with different herb is the way to cure disease. Just rebuilding balance to cure disease there is no need for studying disease itself too much. This feature puts TCM in an advantageous position to cure disease especially stubborn disease what we have not known enough about.
Ever since ancient times, the mountains and
rivers of the earth have served to nurture all
living things. Human beings rely on natural
resources to grow strong, to cure diseases and
promote longevity, to carry on their family
line, and to pursue health and beauty.
In ancient China, the Chinese people came to
understand through thousands of years of experience
that the way to health and beauty lay first
in compliance with the course of nature and
then in the consumption of natural foods. A
proverb goes that Providence nurtures human
beings with all things. The surrounding trees,
flowers, and grass serve not only to entertain
human beings, but also to make them grow strong
and beautiful.
My late father Chen Sher worked as a Chinese
medicine doctor in Taiwan for forty years.
He once served as the chairman of Tainan Chinese
Medicine Doctors Association. In his spare
time, he was fond of collecting and studying
health prescriptions as an auxiliary to his
treatment of diseases or for the consumption
of interested ladies and gentlemen to make
them healthy and beautiful. His prescriptions
vary widely in their effects. Some help improve
physical qualities while others beautify and
strengthen the human body. Each of them has
its unique effect.
To keep them in existence, this book is
compiled and published. I hereby write a preface.

Editor of Dr. Chen's Herbal Tea,
Eldest son of Dr. Chen Sher
Chairman of Tainan City Lawyers Association
About Dr. Chen's herbal tea
formulas
In 1903, Dr. Chen, my grandfather, was born and
raised a farmer's child in Tainan city, Taiwan.
During this time, most farmers were poor and couldn't
afford to send their children to school. Seeing
he was extremely bright and eager for knowledge,
his uncle paid for his schooling and tuition, making
it possible to receive a degree from the school
of Agriculture.
Then he worked for the Taiwan Agriculture
department, at that time under Japanese rule. While
spending numerous hours conducting research in the
fields of Taiwan, he developed an interest in herbal
plants. So, he began to study and research Chinese
herbal medicine, collecting herbs, and analyzing
them. In 1945, Taiwan returned to the rule of China
from Japan. Six years later, he passed the government
exam, which certified him as a doctor of Chinese
herbal medicine. He opened a clinic and began practicing
in Chinese herbal medicine. In those days, people
depended heavily on herbal medicine, so he was extremely
busy.
Nevertheless as busy as he was, he never forgot
the importance of research, and the treatment of
modern disease with herbal medicine. His innovative
methods opened a new dimension of treatment with
Chinese herbal medicine, especially during the polio
epidemic, which handicapped thousands. Dr. Chen's
herbal treatment had reached an amazing 80% cure
rate for polio, gaining immediate island wide reputation.
(Compared to conventional herbal medicine treatment,
a 60% cure rate was considered very effective.)
Dr. Chen continued researching treatment for other
diseases, such as cancer, central nervous system
injuries, and many others, while writing many papers,
and a book about his herbal treatment. Recognized
by medical professors in Japan, they often invited
Dr. Chen to conduct his work and research in Japan.
Dr. Chen refused their invitations because he loved
his hometown, however they continued to exchange
their studies and findings with each other. Eventually,
he was appointed President of the Tainan Herbal
Medicine Association.
In 1989, Dr. Chen died at the age of 87. Dr. Chen
passed on all his knowledge to his eldest son, my
father. Since he was a child, my father studied
herbal medicine from Dr. Chen and became very proficient
with herbal medicine. Now, my father is a highly
respected lawyer and heads the Tainan Attorney Association.
Passed on to him by Dr. Chen, my father has gathered
all the secrets of herbal tonics. From among thousands
of these herbs he has specifically selected both
delicious and effective herbal tea recipes for you.
(most herbal prescriptions are quite disgusting!)
Now, it's time for you to discover Dr. Chen's herbal
tea.
